Once again, another excellent event by the Blantyre Community Committee!
With record crowds this year, everybody looked to have an excellent time and a few fireworks, a first for us, were a nice little surprise.
The weather stayed dry and the acts on stage, once again a huge hit with Blantyre families. The free event was gratefully welcomed despite the change in venue this year. (The event was held at David Livingstone Centre, rather than Glasgow Road as we had earlier in the year been given an indication some festive lights were broken, which later ended up being replaced, following the change in venue.) It was a trial also to see if the venue was more fitting for the Christmas event given the huge successes and suitability of summer events there..
Feedback about the change in venue has been mixed (as we thought may happen with a different location) and all comments will be taken on board for next year.
We received lots of positive feedback about the beautiful grotto, and from traders who were glad to be warm inside. The toys were better, the music and sound was. However, some minor negatives were issues with muddy paths, lack of parking, lighting and other necessary amenities at the David Livingstone Centre, congested entrance to the marquee, which will be taken on board and addressed next year.
The Committee will early next year decide which location is best suited to the Christmas event. We haven’t ruled out the Public Park… and have already started collecting information and feedback about that for future. (This may be a simple decision if next year the Livingstone Centre is a building site!)
Our small group of 10 volunteers have worked exceptionally hard these last few months to provide a quality, memorable festive event. Indeed, a few volunteers gone beyond the ‘call of duty’ in being available day and night to open up, close up etc. We sincerely hope it was enjoyed by all.
Plans for several major events in Blantyre throughout 2018 are already being discussed.
Also a thank you the ladies and girls who volunteered to be Santas Elves, the first aid staff, Kyle and his fairground, to Tina’s Catering van, the staff at Glen Travel for all their help, Stuart Gosling who stepped in as Santa, to Geoff Krawczyk for his kind help, to all the staff at David Livingstone Centre and their associated volunteers, to John Brown Cater Hire, to Crown Marquee and Fred, our Security guard (who endured some cold evenings), to minister Murdo MacDonald, to Amber at Clyde 1, Gavin Watson Printers and businessman Mo Razzaq for their kind donations and everybody else who assisted with sound, lighting and organisation.
Thanks to everybody who attended also. It was a cold day, and despite the muddy boots, hopefully it kick started your Christmas festivities and was enjoyed.
A humble pat on the back to all our committee members. We each have busy lives, families, day jobs and to have given up our valuable time on SO many occasions these last months to make this all fit together for the benefit of ALL the community never ceases to be remarkable.
Finally, we would also like to say ‘get well soon’ to Sandy Cambell, our regular Santa who has recently been ill.
For now though, its feet up for 2 months.
Blantyre Community Committee will be back in early 2018 with some exciting plans about the summer event and “Live at Livvies 3”, which we hope will be bigger and bolder than ever!
